STEWART, Alexander, Canadian jurist, born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, 30 January, 1794; died there, 1 January, 1868. He was the son of a Scottish Presbyterian minister, was educated at the Halifax gram-mar-school, and became a clerk in the ordnance department. He afterward entered a house that was engaged in the West India trade, and soon became a member of the firm, but studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1822. He became a member of the Nova Scotia assembly in 1826, the legislative council in 1837, and in 1840 of the executive council. In 1846 he became master of the rolls and judge of the vice-admiralty court, and in 1856 he was made a companion of the Bath.
