BRUNEL, Alfred, Canadian engineer, born in 1818. From 1844 till 1850 he was employed on various public works in Canada. He was superintendent of the Northern railway from 1853 till 1856, was a commissioner to inquire into the workings of the free ports of Gasps and Sault Ste. Marie in 1862, and in 1863 he was appointed inspector of customs, excise, and canals, in 1869 assistant commissioner of inland revenue, and in 1871 commissioner of inland revenue. During the Fenian troubles he was in active service as lieutenant colonel of the 10th royal regiment.
