CUTHBERT, Alfred, senator, born in Savannah, Georgia, about 1781: died near Monticello, Georgia, 9 July 1856. He was graduated at Princeton College in 1803, studied law, was admitted to the bar, and began to practice in Monticello, Jasper County, Georgia He was first elected to the state legislature, then a representative from Georgia in the 13th and 14th congresses, serving till 1816, when he resigned. He was again elected to the 17th, 18th, and 19th congresses, serving from 3 December 1821, till 3 March 1827. He was elected U. S. senator from Georgia in place of John Forsyth, who resigned 27 June 1834, and was re-elected for a full term, serving from 12 January 1835, till 3 March 1843.
