BRYSON, Andrew, naval officer, born in New York City, 22 July, 1822. He entered the navy as midshipman in 1837" was promoted lieutenant on 30 August, 1851 ; commander, 16 July, 1862 ; captain, 25 July, 1866" commodore, 14 February, 1873; rear-admiral, 25 March, 1880, with which rank he was retired on 1 July, 1881. During the civil war he commanded the steamer "Chippewa" on special service in 1862-'3; the iron-clad "Lehigh," of the South Atlantic blockading squadron, in 1863, being present at the reduction of Fort Macon, and in the principal actions off Charleston from 22 September, 1863, till 5 April, 1864, receiving a wound from a shell, and in 1864-'5 commanded the iron-clad "Essex" in the Mississippi squadron. Previous to his retirement, after forty-three years of service, he was in command of the South Atlantic station.
