BARRE, Antoine Joseph Lefevre de la (del-la-bar), naval officer, born about 1625; died 4 May 1688. Barre's American career began with his appointment as governor of Guiana in 1663. In 1667 he retook Cayenne, the capital, from the Dutch, and the same year he defeated the English in the Antilles and compelled them to raise the blockade of St. Christopher. In 1682 he was appointed governor of Canada, succeeding Frontenac, and led a strong military expedition up the Ottawa river, nominally to treat with the resident tribes, but really intended to intimidate them and compel them to trade with Montreal rather than with New York. His troops, however, succumbed to the malarial effects of the season (August), and he was forced to land near the point where the Rideau canal now has its outlet and sue for peace. For this failure, which was ascribed to his incompetence, he was recalled to France. He is believed to have acquired large wealth by corrupt means.
