CORREIA DE LACERDA, Antonio (cor-ray'-yah da lah-ther'-dah), Portuguese physician, born in Ponte in 1777; died in the province of Maranhao, Brazil, 21 July, 1852. He was graduated at the University of Coimbra, served as military surgeon, and in 1818 went to Brazil to practice his profession. A few years later he immigrated to the United States, where he devoted himself to his professional work with marked success. He returned to Brazil in 1836 and settled at Maranhao, giving much of his time to scientific investigation. He published several scientific books, among them " Flora paraense-maranhensis," "Phytographia paraense-maranhensis," " Nova genera plantarum," "Notes de botanique," "Chemiologia vegetal," " Zoologia paranense," " Observacoes sobre propiedndes therapeuticas das plantas," "Observaccoes meteorologicas," "Observacoes medico-philosophicas," and "Materia medica das Para e Maranhao."
