DUTRA E MELLO, Antonio Francisco (dootraamayl'yo), Brazilian poet, born in Rio Janeiro, 8 August 1823; died 22 February 1843. At an early age he lost his father, but through the efforts of his brother he finished his education. In his spare hours he cultivated poetry, writing verses that have been pronounced among the best productions of American poets. He was a corresponding member of the Polytechnic society of Paris, and member of several other scientific and literary societies. His principal works include "A noite inspiracao poetica," "A noite de S. To,o," "Novo curso pracrico, analytico, theorico e sinthetico da lingua ingleza applicado a lingua portugueza"; and "Historia critica da lingua latina."
