Benjamin Chase

CHASE, Benjamin, clergyman, born in New Hampshire in 1789; died in Natchez, Mississippi, 11 October, 1870. He was graduated at Middlebury in 1814, and, after studying theology, was ordained in the Presbyterian church. His ministerial life was spent entirely in the southwest, where he did a noble missionary work in circulating the Scriptures. He was also a geologist, and presented Oakland, Mississippi, College with a valuable collection of fossils, which he had gathered during his journeys. In 1857 Washington College conferred upon him the degree of D.D.
