MARTIN, Benjamin Nicholas, educator, born in Mount Holly, New Jersey, 20 October, 1816; died in New York city, 26 December, 1883. He was graduated at Yale in 1837, and at the divinity-school in 1840. After filling pulpits in New York city, Hadley, Massachusetts, and Albany, New York, and spending three years in study, he was called in 1852 to the chair of psychology and cognate subjects in the University of the city of New York, where he also lectured on rhetoric, belles-lettres, modern history, political economy, apologetics, and natural theology. In this employment he passed the remaining thirty-one years of his career. He received the degree of S. T. D. from Columbia in 1862, and that of L. H. D. from the regents of the University of the state of New York in 1869. Dr. Martin contributed largely to theological reviews and other periodicals on anti-slavery and national topics during the civil war. He was a member of societies for religious and social improvement, and one of his last lectures was delivered before the Institute of Christian philosophy in November, 1883.
