Bernardo de Lugo

LUGO, Bernardo de (]oo-go), Spanish missionary, born in Lugo, Spain, late in the 16th century; died in Santa F6, New Mexico. He became a Dominican monk, was sent by his superiors to Spanish America, and devoted his life to missionary work among the Indians. He learned the language of the natives of New Grenada, and published a grammar of it under the title "Gramatica de la lengua general del nuevo reyno de Granada, llamada Mosca" (Madrid, 1629). This work is very rare. Toward the close of his life he withdrew into a convent in Santa F5, New Mexico. Pinelo in his "Bibliotheca" attributes to him a work on " Confession" in the Mosca dialect.
