HILLERN, Bertha von, artist, born in Treves, Germany, 4 August, 1857. She came to this country in 1877, and for two years devoted her time to advocating athletic exercises for women, appearing in public as a pedestrian. She then devoted herself to the study of art, which she has since pursued as a profession in Boston. Among her pictures are " The Monk Felix," from Longfellow's " Golden Legend" : "Evening Prayer at the Wayside Shrine, Germany" (1883) ; "The Conversion of the Heathen General, Placidus, by a Miracle while Hunting" (1885); "Live-Oak Forest in the Ojai Valley, California" (1887) ; "St. Paul, the first Hermit," and "A Walk through the Pine Barrens, Florida" (1888). In 1888 she exhibited a large number of landscapes in Boston. She has also devoted much time to writing for the press on hygienic subjects, and is preparing for publication a work on " Physical Culture."
