TORREY, Bradford, essayist, born in Weymouth, Massachusetts, 9 October, 1843. He was educated in the public schools of his native town, taught for two years, and subsequently engaged in business in Boston. Since 1886 he has been an assistant editor of the "Youth's Companion," and a frequent contributor to periodicals. Mr. Torrey has devoted much time to the study of birds, their habits, peculiarities, and domestic traits. He has written numerous papers on this subject, and published "Birds in the Bush" (Boston, 188.5).
