BORGESS, Caspar H., R. C. bishop, born in Addrup, Grand Duchy of Oldenburg, in 1826. When eight years old he came to the United States. He pursued his classical and philosophical studies in Philadelphia and at St. Charles seminary, finished his theological course in St. Xavier's College, Cincinnati, and was ordained in 1848. He was stationed for ten years at Columbus, Ohio, and in 1859 appointed rector of St. Peter's cathedral, Cincinnati, where he remained until he was promoted to the see of Detroit. He was consecrated titular bishop of Caledonia in 1870, and succeeded to the bishopric of Detroit in 1871.
