STRATTON, Charles Carroll, clergyman, born in Mansfield, Pennsylvania, 4 January, 1833. He early settled in Oregon, and was educated at Willamette university. In 1858 he entered the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal church and held various pastorates until 1875, except during 1867-'8, when he returned to Willamette and took his degree. He was elected president of the University of the Pacific in 1877, and held that post for ten years, during which time the attendance rose from about 100 to more than 400. The buildings and appliances increased correspondingly, and the annual income of the institution was advanced from about $7,000 to $25,000. In 1887 he accepted the presidency of Mills college, Oakland, California, which place he now (1888) holds. He was a delegate to the general conference of the Methodist church in Brooklyn, New York, in 1872, and to that in Cincinnati in 1880. The degree of D.D. was conferred upon him by Northwestern and Willamette universities in 1879. He edited the "Autobiography of Erastus O. Haven" (New York, 1883), and has prepared a volume of the sermons and lectures of Bishop Haven.
