CHESNEY, Charles Cornwallis, English soldier, born 29 September, 1826; died 19 March, 1876. He was a professor at Sandhurst military College, and the author of a number of works on military subjects, including "Military View of Recent Campaigns in Virginia" (1863-'5), and "Military Biographies," including several of generals in the American civil war (New York, 1873). He is almost the only Englishman that has written fairly and intelligently of military affairs in the United States. He was the author of a pamphlet entitled "The Battle of Dorking" (London, 1871), which created a great sensation.
