HOOKER, Charles Edward, lawyer, born in Union district, South Carolina, in 1825. He was graduated at Harvard law school in 1846, and afterward practised at Jackson, Mississippi He was elected district attorney of the River district in 1850, and in 1859 a member of the Mississippi legislature, but resigned his seat on entering the Confederate army. He was wounded during the siege of Vicksburg, and, having been promoted to the rank of colonel of cavalry, was assigned to duty on the military court that was attached to General Leonidas Polk's command. He was elected attorney-general of Mississippi in 1865, re-elected in 1868, and, together with the other civil officers of the state, was removed by the military authorities. He was afterward elected to congress as a Democrat, served from 6 December, 1875, till 3 March, 1883, and was again chosen in 1886.
