Charles Emory Smith

SMITH, Charles Emory, journalist, born in Mansfield, Connecticut, 18 February, 1842. He was graduated at Union college in 1861, became editor of the Albany "Express" in 1865, and of the '" Albany Journal" in 1870, and since 1880 has conducted the Philadelphia "Press." He was president of the New York state press association in 1874, and delivered the annual address at its meeting. He was a regent of the University of the state of New York in 1879-'80, a delegate to the National Republican conventions in 1876 and in 1888, has repeatedly served in state conventions, and was temporary and permanent chairman of that body in 1879.
