Charles Frederick Ulrich

ULRICH, Charles Frederick, artist, born in New York city, 18 October, 1858. He began his art studies at Cooper institute and the National academy, New York, and during 1875-'81 continued them under Ludwig Lofftz and Wilhelm Lindenschmit in Munich. In 1879 he gained a bronze medal at the academy there. For several years he followed his profession in New York, but about 1884 he went to Venice, Italy. He was elected an associate of the National academy in 1883, and received the Thomas B. Clarke prize there the following year for his " In the Land of Promise." He has executed several carefully and truthfully painted genre pictures, among which are "The Wood-Engraver" (1882) ; " The Glass-Blowers" and "The Carpenter" (1883); "A Dutch Type-Setter" ; "The Waifs" (1885) ; and "Washing of Feet in the Venice Cathedral."
