BIGLER, David, Moravian bishop, born in Hagerstown, Maryland, 26 December 1806; died in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, 2 July 1875. He prepared for service in the foreign mission field, and went to the West Indies in 1831, where he labored for five years with great zeal and success. His wife's failing health then compelled him to return to the United States, where he successively took charge of the Moravian Churches in Philadelphia, New York, and at Bethlehem, Pennsylvania .At the place last named he was consecrated to the episcopacy on 31 July 1864, after which he removed to Lancaster, where he continued until his death. He was a man of genial character, exercised a great influence socially, and was successful as a preacher.
