ROLLE, Dennis, colonist, born in Devonshire, England, about 1730; died in England in 1797. In 1766 he purchased a district in Florida, and led there 1,000 persons to form a colony; but, owing to the unhealthfulness of the climate and the desertion of those that escaped disease, he soon was left without colonists and without money, and was compelled to work his passage back to England in an American vessel. He then settled on his inherited estate, was elected to the house of commons, was high sheriff, and devoted much time to improving the condition of the lower classes.
