GUNN, Donald, Canadian jurist, born in Falkirk, Caithness-shire, Scotland, in September, 1797; died in St. Andrew's, Manitoba, 30 November, 1878. In 1813 he went to the northwest, and entered the service of the Hudson bay company, in which he remained ten years. In 1823 he settled at Red river, and was for about twenty years one of the judges of the court of session, being president of the court for a part of that time. When the legislative council was instituted in Manitoba he became a member, and retained his seat until that body was abolished in 1876. He was thoroughly versed in the natural history of the northwest, and contributed many papers on this subject to the "Miscellaneous Collections of the Smithsonian Institution," and other publications. He was a member of the board of management of Manitoba college.
