DICKINSON, Donald McDonald, cabinet officer, born in Port Ontario, Oswego County, New York, 17 January, 1847. He was graduated at the University of Michigan in 1867, studied law, was admitted to the bar, and has been engaged in many important cases. He became chairman of the Democratic state committee of Michigan in 1876, and in 1880 was chairman of the Michigan delegation in the Democratic national convention. Since 1884 he has represented Michigan on the national Democratic committee. On 17 January, 1888, he became postmaster-general of the United States.
