DEWDNEY, Edgar, statesman, born in Devonshire, England, in 1835. He went to British Columbia in 1859, and was employed on the Canadian Pacific railway survey as an engineer. He represented Kootenay in the local parliament in 1868',(}, and was returned for the Ddominion parliament in 1872, again in 1874, and by acclamation at the general election in 1878. In 1879 he resigned on being appointed Indian commissioner, which office he held till appointed lieutenant governor of the northwest territories in December 1881.
