McLAUGHLIN, Edward Augustus, poet, born in North Stamford, Connecticut, 9 January, 1798; died in New York city, 15 November, 1861. He followed the trade of a printer, but passed many years as a sailor in the United States navy. His first poems were published when he was sixteen years old, and during his voyages he was accustomed to cultivate his faculty for versification. He published a volume containing, besides some graceful shorter pieces, " The Lovers of the Deep," a long poem in Spencerian stanza, describing the experiences of two castaways who formed a mutual attachment while floating on a fragment of wreck (Cincinnati, 1841).
