BAYNES, Edward, British soldier, died in Sid-mouth, England, 2 February 1829. He was made ensign of the 82d regiment on 13 May 1783, was aide-de-camp to Sir James Craig from 1794 till 1806, became adjutant-general of the forces in North America, 20 August 1807, and was conspicuous in the campaign on the Niagara frontier in the war of 1812. He had served in the West Indies, at the capture of the Cape of Good Hope in 1795, at the capture of a Dutch force in Saldanha bay in September 1796, in the East Indies, in Malta, and in Sicily.
