BAUSA, or BAUZA, Felipe (bah-oo-sah'), Spanish navigator, born in Spain about 1760; died in England in 1833. He began his naval career in 1789, went to Peru with the expedition of the corvettes "Atrevida" and "Descubierta" in 1790, made many charts and plans, and corrected others. His charts of the South American seas and coasts were recognized as the best in existence, and officially adopted by several European nations. Bausa was director of the hydrographic depot of Madrid, but had to immigrate to England for political reasons, and died there.
