Francisco de Terrazas

TERRAZAS, Francisco de (ter-rah'-thas), Mexican poet, born in Mexico about 1520; died there in 1575. He was the son of a companion of Cortes, and served for several years in the army. Afterward he secured a post in the household of the archbishop of Mexico, and later retired to his estate, devoting himself to poetry. He composed elegies and cantatas, deriving inspiration from ancient Indian recitatives, and gained great popularity not only in the New World, but also in Europe. His poems were never published, but the Spanish poet, Miguel Cervantes, has inserted with words of high praise some of Terrazas's verses in his "Galatea."
