REIN, Francisco Sotero dos (ri-ees), Brazilian journalist, born in Maranhao, 22 April, 1800; died there, 16 January, 1871. He studied philosophy and rhetoric in the monastery o'f Our Lady of Carmo, was appointed professor of Latin, and was director of the orphan asylum of Santa Thereza from 1864 till 1870. He edited the "Argos da Lei" and " Maranhense " (1825) ; the "Constitutional" (1831); the " Investigator de Maranhito" (1836); the " Re-vista" (1840) : the "'observador" (1854) ; and in 1856 obtained the editorship of the official paper "Publi('adorMaranhense." In 1861 he abandoned his journalistic career. He published " Postillas de grammatica geral apl, licada g lingua Portus " " )" " gueza pela analyse dos classlcos (Ro Janen'o, 1862); "Gramma, tica Portugueza aecommodada aos principios geraes da palavra seguidos da immediata applica6go practica" (1866); "Os commentario de Caius Julius Cesar," translated into Portuguese (1869) : and " Curso de IAteratura Portugueza d Brazileira " (1870).
