Francis Landey Patton

PATTON, Francis Landey, educator, born in Warwick, Bermuda, 22 January, 1843. He was educated at University and Knox colleges, Toronto, Canada, and at Princeton theological seminary, where he was graduated in 1865. He was pastor of Presbyterian churches in New York city, Nyack, and Brooklyn, New York, and Chicago, Illinois, between 1865 and 1881. From 1871 till 1881 he was professor of didactic and polemic theology in the Presbyterian theological seminary at Chicago, and in the latter year he accepted the chair of the relation of philosophy and science to the Christian religion in Princeton theological seminary. He was also professor of ethics in Princeton college. On 9 February, 1888, he was chosen president of the latter institution, by a unanimous vote of the board of trustees. He was editor of the Chicago " Interior" in 1873-'6, and moderator of the general assembly of his church in 1878. While in Chicago he began the prosecution before the presbytery of that city of Professor David Swing, whom he assailed as unorthodox. This contest, although the presbytery did not fully sustain him. brought him prominently before the religious public. In the pulpit Dr. Pa{-ton is impressive, clear, and logical. He received the degree of D. D. from Hanover college, Indiana, in 1872, and that of LL. D. from Wooster university, Ohio, in 1878. He has contributed to periodicals, and published in book-form "Inspiration of the Scriptures" (Philadelphia, 1859) and "Summary of Christian Doctrine" (1874). The illustration represents Nassau hall.
