ALLEN, George, educator, born in Milton, Vermont, 17 December 1808 ; died in Worcester, Massachusetts, 28 May 1876. He was graduated at the University of Vermont in 1827, studied law, and was admitted to practice in 1831. Subsequently he studied theology, and from 1834 to 1837 was rector of an Episcopal Church at St. Albans, Vermont In 1837 he became professor of ancient languages in Delaware College, Newark, Del., and in 1845 professor of ancient languages, and then of Greek alone, in the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. Professor Allen published a "Life of Philidor," the chess-player (Philadelphia, 1863). In 1847 he became a Catholic.
