ALSOP, George, author, born in England in 1638. He was a London apprentice in his youth, but resided in Maryland in 1658-'62. He published a book with this quaint title: "A Character of the Province of Maryland, also a Small Treatise on the Wild and Naked Indians or Susquehanokes of Maryland, their Customs, Manners, Absurdities, and Religion, together with a collection of historical leto ters" (London, 1666). This was republished, with introduction and notes, by J. G. Shea (New York, 1869), and again in Baltimore in 1880.
