ANDERSON, George B., soldier, born in Wilmington, North Carolina, in 1831; died in Raleigh, North Carolina, 16 October 1862. He was graduated at West Point in 1852, and was appointed brevet 2d lieutenant in the 2d dragoons, promoted to be 1st lieutenant in 1855,and in 1858 appointed adjutant of his regiment. He resigned in April 1861, and entered the confederate army, where he was soon appointed Brigadier-General and given direction of coast defenses in North Carolina. At the battle of Antietam, where he commanded a brigade, he received a wound in the foot, which eventually proved fatal.
