COMFORT, George Fisk, educator, born in Berkshire, Tompkins County, New York, 20 September, 1833. He was graduated at Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut, and became a teacher. He studied in Europe in 1860-'65, and from 1865 till 1868 was professor of languages at Allegheny College, Meadville, Pennsylvania In 1872 he was appointed professor of aesthetics and modern languages at Syracuse, New York, university. His publications include a series of textbooks for the German language. In 1866 he was elected a member of the institute archaeologico, Rome, Paris, and Berlin.
