GARTH, George, British soldier, died in 1819. His father, John Garth, was member of parliament for Devizes. The son entered the 1st regiment of foot-guards in September, 1755; was made colonel in February, 1779; major general in November 1782; and general in 1801. He was afterward governor of Placentia, and was a general of brigade in the American war of the Revolution. In July, 1779, he was second in command of Tryon's expedition, which plundered and destroyed Fairfield and Norwalk, Connecticut, and served under Clinton in the expedition against Charleston in 1780.
