COLTON, George Hooker, author, born in West-ford, New York, 27 October, 1818; died in New York City, 1 December, 1847. He was graduated at Yale in 1840, and became a teacher in Hartford, Connecticut He wrote a poem to commemorate the Indian wars in which General Harrison had been engaged, entitled "Te-cumseh, or the West Thirty Years Since," and prepared, from the sources examined in the preparation of the poem, a series of lectures on the Indians, which he delivered in several cities during 1842-'3. In 1844 he read a poem before the Phi Beta Kappa society of Yale. In January, 1845, he issued the first number of a political magazine, called the "American Whig Review," which he conducted with energy and ability until his death.
