WALKER, Gilbert Carlton, congressman, born in Binghamton, New York, 1 August, 1832; died in New York city, 11 May, 1885. He was graduated at Hamilton college in 1854, admitted to the bar in 1855, and settled in Oswego, New York He removed to Chicago, Ill, in 1859, and engaged in politics while practising his profession. In 1864 he settled in Norfolk, Virginia, where he became president of the Exchange national bank, and in July. 1869, he was elected governor of Virginia by a majority of 18,000 over Henry H. Wells, who was at that time military governor of the state. At the expiration of his service he was chosen to congress as a Conservative, serving from 1875 till 1879. He resumed his profession in 1879, and, removing to New York city, practised law there until the time of his death.
