SCOFIELD, Glenni William, jurist, born in Chautauqua county, New York, 11 March, 1817. After graduation at, Hamilton college in 1840, he removed to Pennsylvania, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1843. He was a member of the Pennsylvania assembly in 18,50-'1 and of the state senate in 1857-'9, and in 1861 was appointed president judge of the 18th judicial district. He was then elected to congress as a Republican, and served from 7 December, 1863, till 3 March, 1875. He took an active part in the reconstruction measures, and served on important committees, being chairman of that on naval affairs. On 28 March, 1878, he was appointed register of the treasury, and he served until 1881, when he was appointed an associate justice of the United States court of claims. Hamilton gave him the degree of LL.D. in 1884.
