Henry Cosgrove

COSGROVE, Henry, R. C. bishop, born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, in 1834. He removed with his parents to Dubuque when eleven years old. He was ordained in 1857, and appointed assistant pastor of St. Mary's, Davenport. He became pastor in 1862, and shortly afterward erected a church and school. He was appointed vicar-general of the diocese in 1882. On the death of Bishop McMullen he was selected as administrator; and in 1884 was proposed to the holy see as his successor in the bishopric of Davenport. Dr. Cosgrove is the first native of the United States that has been appointed bishop west of the Mississippi.
