ECCLES, Henry, Canadian lawyer, born in Bath, England, in 1817; died in Toronto, 22 November 1863. He was educated in Canada by his father, a retired British officer, studied law, and was called to the bar in 1842. He was elected a bencher of the Law society in 1853, and appointed Queen's Counsel in 1856. He became very prominent in his profession, was noted for the clearness and simplicity of his style, and was also famous for his power of extorting the truth from witnesses.
