GLADWIN, Henry, British soldier, died near Chesterfield, Derby, England, 22 June, 1791. He became a lieutenant in the 48th foot, 28 August, 1753, was wounded in the expedition of Braddock in 1755, promoted to a captaincy in the 80th on 25 December, 1757, and rose to the rank of major, 20 June, 1759. He was in command of the fort at Detroit when it was besieged by Pontiac in 1763-'4, and for his gallant defense was promoted to a lieu- tenant-colonelcy, 17 September, 1763, and to a colonelcy, 29 August, 1777. In the Revolutionary war he was a deputy adjutant general, and served with distinction, becoming a major general, 26 September, 1782.
