RICHTER, Henry Joseph, R. C. bishop, born in Neuenkirchen, Oldenburg, Germany, 9 April, 1838. He came to this country in 1854, was educated at St. Paul's school and Mount St. Mary's college, Cincinnati, and in 1860 entered the American college in Rome, being graduated at the Propaganda as D. D., and receiving his ordination in 1865. Returning to Cincinnati in that year, he was made vice-president of Mount St. Mary's seminary, where he was professor of dogma, philosophy, and liturgy until 1870. He founded the Church of St. Laurence, and was director of the Academy of Mount St. Vincent. On the establishment of the diocese of Grand Rapids he was consecrated its first bishop, on 22 April, 1883, which diocese contains about 100 churches, 60 priests, and 32 parish schools.
