LELAND, Henry, artist, born in Walpole, Massachusetts, in 1850; died in Paris, France, 5 December, 1877. He engaged in mercantile pursuits in Boston till 18'74, when he resolved to be an artist, and became a pupil of Bonnat in Paris. Here his short career was marked by rapid success. His early death was the result of an accident. In 1876 he exhibited the portrait of Mme. d'Alembert at the Paris salon, and in 1877 "A Chevalier of the Time of Henry III." and "An Italian Girl."
