Henry Schell Hagert

HAGERT, Henry Schell, lawyer, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 2 May, 1826; died there, 18 December, 1885. He was graduated at the Central high school, Philadelphia, in 1842, admitted to the bar, 8 May, 1847, and soon afterward became solicitor for the board of guardians of the poor. After the consolidation of the city in 1854 he was appointed assistant city solicitor, and as such drafted many of the most important city ordinances. He served as assistant district attorney in 1856-'7, 1868-'71, and 1875-'8, and as district attorney in 1878-'81. He was especially distinguished as a nisi prius lawyer. In early life he contributed prose and poetry to periodicals; and after his death a volume of his poems, with a memoir by Charles A. Lagen, was printed privately (Philadelphia, 1886).
