SMITH, Henry, police commissioner, born in Amsterdam. Montgomery County, New York, 20 October, 1820 ; died in New York city, 23 February, 1874. Early in life tie engaged in trade in New York city, and for twenty-five years he was one of the most active politicians in the Whig and Republican parties. He was a member of the New York board of councilmen in 1854-'7, supervisor in 1862-'8, and president of the board of police in 1868-'74.
