POWELL, Henry Watson, British soldier, born in England in 1733; died in Lyme, England, 14 July, 1814. He became a captain in the 64th foot in 1756, served in the West Indies in 1759, and was stationed in this country in 1768. He became lieutenant-colonel in 1771, participated in Gem John Burgoyne's expedition in 1777, with the rank of brigadier-general, and in July of the latter year, after the evacuation of Fort Ticonderoga, was placed in command of that post, and successfully defended it against New Hampshire and Connecticut militia. In 1801 he became a general.
