MERCIER, Honore, Canadian member of parliament, born in St. Athanase, Quebec, 15 October, 1840. He studied law, and was admitted to the bar of Lower Canada in 1867. He was editor of "Le Courrier de St. Hyacinthe" from 1862 till 1864, and also in 1866, and, after sitting in the Dominion parliament for Rouville from 18'72 till 1874, was elected to the legislative assembly of Quebec as solicitor-general in the Joly government in May, 1879, and held this portfolio till the resignation of the government in October of the same year. He was reelected in 1881 by acclamation, and again in December, 1886, and, on the resignation of the Tail-lon administration, formed an administration and became attorney-general in January, 1887.
