CAMPBELL, Hugh George, naval officer, born in South Carolina in 1760" died in Washington, District of Columbia, 11 November, 18o0. In 1775 he volunteered on board the first man-of-war commissioned by the council of South Carolina. He was made master commander, 27 July, 1799, and captain, 16 October, 1800. He served in the Mediterranean in 1804.'5, and in 1812 commanded some gun-boats in St. Mary's River during an insurrection against the Spanish rule in Florida.
