MORSE, Isaac Edwards, lawyer, born in Attakapas, Louisiana, 22 May, 1809; died in New Orleans, Louisiana, 11 February, 1866. He was educated at military academies in Vermont and Middletown, Connecticut, was graduated at Harvard in 1829, and studied law in New Orleans and in Paris, France. After being admitted to the bar, he began the practice of his profession in New Iberia, whence he was sent to the state senate. He was elected as a Democrat to congress, served, with re-elections, from 2 December, 1844, till 3 March, 1851, and then became attorney-general of Louisiana. In 1856 he was sent as United States minister to Colombia to demand indemnity for the death of American citizens that had been murdered while they were crossing the isthmus of Panama. Subsequently he followed the fortunes of his state in her secession from the Union.
