READ, Jacob, senator, born in South Carolina in 1752; died in Charleston, South Carolina, 17 July, 1816. He received a liberal education, studied law in England from 1773 till 1776, and practised in Charleston. During the Revolution he served as a major of South Carolina volunteers, and was taken prisoner, and confined for four years at St. Augustine, Florida He was elected a member of the legislature, and in 1783 was sent as a delegate of South Carolina to the Continental congress, of which body he was a member till 1786. He was elected as a Federalist to the United States senate, taking his seat on 7 December, 1795, and when he had served through his term, which ended on 3 March, 1801, President John Adams appointed him judge of the United States court for tile district of South Carolina, which office he held until his death.
