SAINT VICTOR, Jacques Benjamin Maximilien, Count de, West Indian author, born in Fort Dauphin, Santo Domingo, 14 January, 1770; died in Paris, 8 August, 1858. He studied in the College of La F15che and became a journalist. Under Napoleon he was on the staff of the "Journal desDdbats," and after 1815 he founded several Roman Catholic and royalist magazines. In 1830 he revisited his native hind, but he went afterward to the United States, explored the country for two years, and then visited most of the West Indies. His works include "Tableau historique et pittoresque de Paris depuis les Gaulois jusqu"£ nos jours" (3 vols., Paris, 1808-'12)" "@]uvres po6tiques" (1822)" "Lettres sur les Etats-Unis dcrites en 1832-'33," which attracted much attention (2 vols., 1835); and "Journal de voyage" (2 vols., 1836).
